My Social Action Project Reflection
This project has successfully raised awareness about the importance of recycling and how and why we should incorporate it into our daily lives. The learners, in my opinion, were aware of recycling but were unaware of the impact it has on our environment and future generations. With the posters displayed throughout the school and the informative PowerPoint (shown in assembly), awareness for the issue was spread, and learners brought things to recycle or expressed how they had incorporated recycling at home.
The challenges of this project were undoubtedly attempting to interpret recycling in ways that both young and old learners could comprehend. As well as making it enjoyable so that learners will want to participate.
The success of this project is the seamless integration of it into learners' daily lives, such as using different dustbins for different materials or collecting scrap paper in the classroom to put in the large recycling bin. Learners had a great time creating the bottle cap mural, which was only made possible because they had collected bottle caps at school and at home in the weeks prior.
This service-learning has helped me professionally by pushing myself outside of my comfort zone and speaking about topics that I am passionate about and spreading awareness about issues that I believe are beneficial to our present and future. I was honest and admitted that I had never recycled before, but that I am gradually incorporating it into my household. This taught me that I am a lifelong learner and that there is always something new to learn in order to improve myself not only as a person but also as a teacher.
This service learning has had a personal impact on me because, after conducting extensive research, I realized the significance of recycling and how it affects our environment and future generations. I learned that even a small change in the right direction is still a change. I learned that I should put my words into action and incorporate recycling into my daily routine.
The benefits of this initiative in the school and community include increased awareness of the positive effects of recycling and the negative effects of pollution. The recycling process is being participated in by more learners and teachers (reusing bottle caps as counters, for art projects or phonetic awareness). The mural will be displayed as a constant reminder to teachers, learners, parents, and the community to recycle and, if they are unsure, to conduct some recycling research.

Shay this is absolutely amazing! Well done on a wonderful project. You really created awareness and allowed the learners to be a huge part of the initiative. I love the slide show as it provides a lovely aspect of the initiative. Congratulations Shay, your hard work has paid off.
Hi Shay! What a lovely social action project and congrats on the successful implementation. This has really spoken to me and would love to implement this in my school or classroom one day. Everyone is aware of the term polluting but its great that you saw a gap in the knowledge on the impact it has on the environment. Well done for nailing this!! All my love,
Shannon Butler
Dear Shay, congrats on your project! As someone who is always pro-environment, this one really resonated. I know these sorts of projects can present several challenges when educating younger learners, but it sounds as though you really pushed through and nailed it!
Well done, Shay! Ashleigh ST10119644

Dear Shay❤️
I really love this initiative. This is a very well-thought out project.
I love how you made posters and a presentation to ensure that all learners are aware of your project and feel part of it, VERY CLEVER!
I love the idea of recycling, it is important it is instilled from young in order for them the learn the importance of it and to hopefully make a difference in the environment we live in.
I am sure that each learner and staff member enjoyed being part of this initiative, I know I would've loved to be part of it.
Well done!😀xxx
